An Adamantine Wall
Friday, 17 March 2023
In GITANJALI, Rabindranath Tagore writes:-
“He whom I enclose with my name is weeping in this dungeon. I am ever busy building this wall all around; and as this wall goes up into the sky day by day and I lose sight of my true being in its dark shadow.
I take pride in this great wall, and I plaster it with dust and sand lest a least hole should be left in this name; and for all the care I take I lose sight of my true being”.
And this adamantine wall is obstinate ego, the boisterous mind which takes us far far away from our real nature. This mind is compared to a maddened monkey drunk with the wine of desires, stung by the Scorpio of jealousy at the success of others and possessed with the demon of pride. Overpowered by ego, powerful mind, we completely forget our true nature, which is all Existent, all Knowledge and all Bliss. In the language of Bible, our true Self, the Spirit, “the Soul is the Breath of God”. In the language of Kuran, “It is the Soul of God”. Do we mean to say that the Spirit of God, the Self, the Soul can ever be other than Bliss, Knowledge and Existent.
Alas! It has been enclosed in the dungeon of ego-me or mine or reckless mind. We are at the mercy of mind. We were masters but are reduced the slaves of mind. We are gloomed and doomed when the mind is depressed and sad. We are over the moon when mind is joyful. We consider ourselves nothing but mind. We are to live in present. The present moment is the only reality. Even in thought, there is no past or future. We have to drag the past or future into present even to think of. But the mind always resides in past or future.
Mind is always brooding over the dead past or making castles in future. It never stays in present. Present is its death-bed because there is no space in the present for thoughts in the mind to jog around. Whereas the truth is
Past is History
Future is Mystery
Present is Treasury
The same feelings were expressed by a poet:
Trust no future, however, pleasant,
Let the dead past bury its dead
Act, act, in the living present
Heart within and God over head
But the mind will never let us stay in present. The more we try to control, the more aggressive it will be. This is the adamantine wall.
To raze this adamantine wall and to realize our true Self, we need to do MEDITATION regularly and persistently but before we start on this pilgrimage, we have to understand clearly what it is. To start with, we must be clear that it is not at all concentration, contemplation and thinking. All these are the characteristics and qualities of mind and meditation is going beyond mind.
Meditation is the absence of mind. There is no intrinsic possibility that mind can create meditation. As light and darkness can’t stay together, meditation and mind can’t exist at the same time. When meditation blooms, mind is seen nowhere. Even meditation is not experienced when you really go into the deep meditation. Only Bliss is experienced. When awareness is full in meditation, we don’t feel the awareness, we feel the Bliss. In deep meditation, we don’t feel the mind, we feel only the Bliss, which is our true nature. So it is remarked that
“No need to lament if you don’t see any light or image in the meditation; go deep into the perception of Bliss and there you will find the presence of God. Seek not a part but the whole.
Meditation which eradicates the adamantine wall of mind, ego does not wage any war against mind or ego. It never attempts to control the mind or think concentrated on any object. It is non-objective and non-doing state. It is simply subjectivity. It is just to watch witness the thoughts, mind, ego or whatever is going on within the body or mind without any evaluation, judgment, appreciation or condemnation.
Our mind is a continuous flow of thoughts day-in and day-out. Meditation is to watch the thoughts without any interruption and interference. Be an observer, Be a witness. Observe your thoughts as you are standing on the side of a road watching the traffic going up and down. A strange phenomena would start happening. If your observation, awareness is 10%, that much energy has moved from the mind to observe and mind is left with 90% energy available. A moment comes when our awareness is 50% and it goes on growing as mind goes on losing its energy. Traffic becomes less and less and less and awareness grows more and more:
90% awareness 10% mind
99% awareness 1 % mind
100% awareness mind disappear
The road is empty. There is only the observer. The adamantine wall is razed to the ground. Bliss surfaces and tears of Bhav flow out, Swami Ji’s holy voice rings:-
तेरी याद में रो लेना, यह प्यास हमारी है
विरह का इक आँसू , सौ शास्त्रों से भारी है
Bewailing in your remembrance is our thirst. A tear drop is greater than all the scriptures of world.
Our mind is talking continuously. If inner talks drops even for a moment, we are able to have a glimpse of no-mind. That is the state of MEDITATION. That is the true state, Meditation is no-mind. Mind cannot create meditation. Meditation is witnessing whatever is going within the mind – desires, thoughts, worries, anxieties, imaginations and all its goes in and around the world. We just become the Witness. We witness that
we are not the body
We are not the mind
We are not the thoughts
We are not the intellect
We are not the astral body
We are just the Witness standing on the top of a cliff witnessing whatever is happening down the cliff –thoughts, feelings, anxieties worries, joys, sorrows, emotions, imaginations etc. without any interference or involvement. As if it is none of our business, totally indifferent. We witness our thoughts, our mind as we are lying on velvet like green grass of an orchard without worrying to know where thoughts are coming from and where they are going to.
The meditation covers a very long pilgrimage. When we say, ‘Meditation is witnessing, it is the beginning of the Meditation. When we say, “Meditation is no-mind, it is the completion of pilgrimage. Witnessing is the beginning and no-mind is the fulfillment. Witnessing is the method to reach no-mind. But start from witnessing. Then it starts growing. Go on nourishing it, go on looking after it, go on to taking care of it, go on watering it. Strengthen it in every possible way. One day, it will blossom and adamantine wall will be eradicated and mind ego will be nowhere and a voice will ring:-
ये सैर क्या है अजब अनोखा, कि राम मुझमें मैं राम में हूँ
बगैर सूरत है गजब का जलवा, कि राम मुझमें मैं राम में हूँ
Wonderful is vision that I and Self are One.
