Heal Thyself

To ‘Heal Thyself’ you are to know “Who You Are”. We all know that we are, but don’t know, what we are. Are we the congregation of few molecules to be separated sooner or later? Or are we the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent current of life and consciousness within the body? In the words of a spiritual master:

“Mind is the chief factor governing the body. One should always avoid suggesting to mind thoughts of limitations such as sickness, old age and death. Rather the mind should constantly be told this truth, “I am the infinite which has become the body. The body is a manifestation of spirit which is the ever youthful spirit.

Have firm faith in your own Divinity, Reality and Self. Religion is in us. The kingdom of Heaven is within. No books or teachers can do more than help to find it out and even without them we can find all the truth within. God is within and not without. Search outside for Him is all in vain, Gurudev Shri Swami Vishvas Ji recites:

जब अपने ही दिल में खुदाई है, काबा में सजदा कौन करे
जब दिल में ख्याले सनम आ बसा, फिर गैर की पूजा कौन करे

When He is within all of us, why should we bow before Kaba? When the heart is full of His devotion, why ought we to worship the stranger?

Here is a quote:

“God is the soul of our souls, our inner Self. No wonder we love Him. Whom else can we love? We want to be steady flame burning without smoke”.

In Gitanjali, Gurudev Rabindera Nath Tagore exclaims:

“If I call not thee in my prayers, if I keep not thee in my heart, thy love for me still waits for my love? Then eventually I would say:

“That I want thee, only thee – let my heart repeat without end. All desires that distract me, day and night are false and empty to the core”.

“As the storm still seeks its end in peace when it strikes against peace with all its might, even thus my rebellion strikes against thy love and still its cry is – ‘I want thee, only thee’”.

In the words of Jesus of Nazareth, “If you have a mustard seed of faith and bid the mountain to come, it will come” but we must have firm faith that there is only one Reality, one Divinity and one Self and that is our own true Self. This is not the pony ego, the little self which is the cause of all miseries, troubles and tribulation. This little self, this rascal ego must be lost completely in your own true Self. We must have full faith that the Reality is only one and this universe of differences is not reality. Live that Reality, feel that Reality and you will see that all your circumstances, all your imminent dangers, all troubles and anxieties that stare you in the face are bound to disappear.

We put more faith in the outside phenomena than in the Divinity. We make the world more real than God. We have hypnotized ourselves into a rigidity with regard to outside phenomena and thus it is that we involve ourselves into all sorts of sickness and trouble. The false ego, the restless mind is the cause of all troubles and tribulations. To heal ourselves , we are to know the real Self.

What is the real Self?
The body is not the real Self.
The mind is not the real Self.
The little life is not the real Self.

That which is the same to-day, yesterday and forever is the real Self. That which persists is real. Consciousness in wakeful state is different from dreaming state but consciousness in deep sleep is pure which keeps awake all the time. That is our real Self which does not sleep. Then we say, “I slept so sound that I dreamt nothing at all”. It means that consciousness was awake in sound sleep. This consciousness identifies itself with nothingness whereas consciousness in wakeful state identifies itself with body and consciousness in dreaming state is different from wakeful state. In dreams, one may become an emperor though in reality, one may be a beggar. Our real Self is the pure consciousness of dreamless state.

Realise your own Real Self and be God over your world or it will lord over you. Have no doubt as to your own Divine Self. According to Swami Ram Tirath, “you had better a bullet in your heart than a doubt there.” Gurudev Shri Swami Vishvas Ji recites:

दिल के आईने में है तस्वीरे यार,
जब ज़रा गर्दन झुकाई देख ली

He dwells in the innermost shrine of heart (beyond mind). I have His vision there. Another recitation is:

कर लै दिल दी सफाई, जे दीदार चाहीदा
तू जहान तो की लैणा, तैनूं यार चाहीदा

In order to have His vision, make your heart pure. This world is of no use without Him. Gurudev Swami Vishvas Ji makes it clear that by heart, we don’t mean this piece of flesh which beats all the time. By purifying the heart, we mean to go beyond mind, to be of no mind. It is the adamantine wall of boisterous and restless mind which stands between us and our Real Self. It has to be razed through regular and persistent Vishvas Meditation. Ordinarily meditation is considered as concentration on something or some object. It is to think about something concentrated. It is not meditation. It is not to think at all. It is not about this or that. It is objectless. There is no object. It is simple subjectivity. The innermost core of man is subjectivity.

So in Vishvas Meditation, we are not to concentrate on anything or object. We just have to be witness because our true Self is the Witness.

There is but One, the Free, knower Self
Without a name or form
In Him is Maya dreaming all this dream.
The Witness He appears a nature, soul

–Swami Vivekananda

Our mind is a continuous flow of thoughts and it is always rush hour day in and day out. Meditation is to witness all these thoughts without any evaluation or judgment, appreciation or condemnation. Observe your thoughts, your mind as you are standing on the side of a road or on the top of cliff watching the traffic or whatever is happening at the bottom of cliff without any involvement or interference. Through persistent regular witnessing, we shall find that the caravan of thoughts starts losing its strength, traffic becomes less and less and the witnessing becomes more and a day will come when the sky will be clearand we will be able to go beyond mind and know who we are and eventually heal ourselves.

अपनी न की तलाश, बड़ी भूल यह हुई
बरसों किये ख़राब खुदा, तलाश में हमने

Vain is the search for God. Know Thyself and heal Thyself.
